Pirates sign Bukarts to ATO

The Portland Pirates added dynamic forward Rihards Bukarts, signing him to an amateur tryout contract, the team announced Monday.

Bukarts, a 5-foot-9, 186-pound left wing from Jurmala, Latvia joins the AHL after spending most of the season in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks. In 55 games this season, Bukarts has scored 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points. During the 2014-15 campaign, the former member of HK Riga had 33 goals and 74 points in 62 games.

“Bukarts is a dynamic player who has had success on multiple WHL teams. Not only does he bring a proven scoring ability but he adds skill and speed to our depth on offense,” said Portland Pirates General Manager Eric Joyce.

Bukarts is expected to join the Pirates in time for a home-and-home series against the Providence Bruins, starting Friday at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
