McKegg recalled for Florida; Pirates sign Sikura to PTO

The Portland Pirates will be down another veteran after the Florida Panthers recalled forward Greg McKegg from their American Hockey League affiliate Sunday morning.

McKegg, a 6-foot-0, 191-pound center from St. Thomas, Ontario, has appeared in 31 games for Portland this season, scoring nine goals, 12 assists for 21 points.

McKegg will be eligible for the Panthers Monday night when Florida hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:00 p.m., at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.

Forward Sasha Barkov joins Erik Gubranson and Willie Mitchell on Injured Reserve after a rash of injuries over the last two weeks.

As a result, the Panthers have recalled several players from Portland including John McFarland, Garrett Wilson, Brent Regner and now McKegg. The Pirates will still be without Shane Harper as he recovers from an undisclosed injury. Sena Acolatse is also unavailable for this afternoon’s game as he serves a one-game suspension for a match penalty that he received in Saturday’s game against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

With Portland having just 11 healthy forwards and six defensemen, Pirates’ GM Eric Joyce has signed the forward Tyler Sikura to a professional tryout contract.

Sikura, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, joins the Pirates from the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL. Sikura played for current Pirates’ asst. coach Nick Vitucci, who was Director of Hockey Operations for that past last seven seasons.

The Aurora, Ontario native, who is in his rookie season, has scored 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points in 46 games with the Walleye this season.

Sikura will be eligible for the Pirates in time for this afternoon’s game at the Mohegan Sun Arena against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.
