Dymock snaps Southern Maine’s winless streak

Senior Zach Dymock’s power-play goal at 8:48 of the third period was the difference Friday night at the University of Southern Maine Huskies snapped a long winless streak with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Saint Anselm College Hawks in New England Hockey Conference action at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the first for the Huskies since November 28 and snapped a 12-game winless stretch (0-11-1). The Huskies are now 6-15-1 overall and 3-12-0 in league play. The Hawks, who had beaten the Huskies 3-2 at home in December, slipped to 10-8-3 overall and 6-6-3 in NEHC games.

Dymock took a pass from senior PM Lapointe in the right wing circle, curled out and across the blue line before whipping a wicked wrist shot past Saint Anselm rookie goalie Colin Soucy for his seventh goal of the season. Lapointe and sophomore Brett Norman picked up the assists.

Sophomore goalie Kyle Shapiro protected the lead over the final 11:12, including through two Saint Anselm power plays. Shapiro finished with 24 saves, including 10 in the third period, to collect his sixth win of the season. Soucy made 18 stops before being lifted with 1:43 to play in favor of the extra attacker.

Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period. Freshman Tyler Mathieu took a long pass from classmate Parker Sanderson to skate in a lone on Soucy. The rookie pivot held his shot before snapping a wrist shot over the glove hand. The goal was the fifth of the season for Mathieu. Sanderson and Dymock picked up the assists.

Senior Bryan Sullivan equalized for the Hawks in the second period at 13:12. Shapiro stopped senior Mark Meads in close with the left pad, but the rebound went out to Sullivan who buried the puck into the open side from 20 feet out at 13:12. Meads and rookie Patrick Horrocks earned the assists.

Looking for a tying goal after Dymock put the Huskies ahead, the Hawks went on the power play at 10:54 of the third period, and again with 1:43 to play, but came up empty. Saint Anselm finished with a 25-20 edge in shots on goal, but was stymied on all four power-play opportunities. Southern Maine was 1 for 2 with the man advantage.

Southern Maine will host New England College for Senior Day on Saturday. Saint Anselm travels to the University of New England on Saturday.
