Albert nets OT winner for Colby

The Colby College men’s hockey team suffered the lowest point of the season against Hamilton College in January, but this time the Mules may have had the highlight of the year with a huge 2-1 overtime victory over the 15th-ranked Continentals on Friday night.

The Mules, who lost 7-1 to Hamilton at Alfond Rink on Jan. 8, improved to 7-8-4 overall and 4-7-2 in the NESCAC. Colby will play at Amherst on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Mules took a 5-2 win over Amherst on Jan. 9. Bowdoin notched a 3-1 win against Amherst on Friday.

In a wild overtime session, Devin Albert scored one of the prettiest goals of the season on a three-on-two. Albert brought the puck down the right side, dished it over to Cam MacDonald, and then received the puck back from MacDonald for a high shot for the winner with just 27 seconds left. Jack Burton had the clear and had the second assist.

Colby goaltender Emerson Verrier stopped 35 shots and made a number of spectacular stops. In the overtime session, the Mules turned the puck over at the defensive blue line to give Hamilton a breakaway opportunity. Verrier came out of the net to make one of the biggest saves of the season.

The Mules took a holding penalty in the extra session and killed that off to leave about one minute to play.

Both teams had two chances on the power play in the third period without converting.

Geoff Sullivan gave the Mules a 1-0 lead just 2:35 into the game on the power play. He held the puck, was able to get around a defender, and smacked a backhand shot through an EJ Rauseo screen for the goal.

The Mules had the better of play in the opening 11 minutes, but Hamilton tied the game at 1-1 on Neil Conway’s seventh of the season.

Colby held the Continentals (12-5-2 overall, 7-4-2 NESCAC) to an 0-for-6 on the power play.
