Brunswick doubles Kennebunk in Class B match up

BRUNSWICK –The Brunswick Dragons scored early in the third to extend their lead as they went on to a 6-3 victory over Kennebunk in a key Class B South contest at Sid Watson Arena in Brunswick.

Brunswick was coming off 12 days between regular season contests.

“We were flat for the first few minutes,” Brunswick coach Bill Bodwell said. “Kennebunk is a proud program, and they hit hard. I thought we adjusted well and got our skating legs under us as the game went along.”

They had an exhibition game with Hebron Academy’s “B” team where they lost 6-2 during the layoff.

Bo Beveridge put the Rams on the board first when his shot from the right circle caught Brunswick goalie Riley Kirk off guard as he was deep in his crease. The puck went over Kirk’s left shoulder 6:50 into the contest. James Ross notched the lone assist.

The Dragons respond 62 seconds later as Corey Taker-Laberge found the back of the net with freshman Jacob Doring picking up the assist.

The second period saw five goals scored and three lead changes.

Brunswick took its first lead of the game on the power play when Nate Granholm’s blast from the point found the back of the net 4:05 into the period.

Brunswick (8-5-1) was 1-for-2 with the man advantage while Kennebunk was scoreless on their two chances.

Kennebunk (6-7-1) notched the next two goals in the stanza as Will O’Neil found Camden Connor 24 seconds after Granholm’s goal. Beveridge returned the favor to James Ross as Beveridge set up Ross nearly three minutes after Connor’s goal to give the Rams the 3-2 lead.

“It’s tough, you want to get goals to gain momentum, that’s so huge,” Smith said. “This year, it’s something that killed us, we’ve scored, and we’ve given up a goal right after. It’s something we are continuing to work on and try to improve on.”

The lead wouldn’t last wrong as Jacob Doring found the back of the net at the 8:37 mark of the period with Jamison Cyr setting the goal up.

Brunswick went into the dressing room with the 4-3 lead when Michael Deveaux found Matthew Deveaux on a give and go with 2:59 remaining in the period.

“We worked really hard on our conditioning this season, so we always told the guys if we put ourselves in a good spot, the third period should be our period,” Bodwell said.

Dragons extended their lead when Jared Hummer crossed the red line for a simple dump in, the puck to an in-between hop on Kennebunk goalie Spencer Desrochers into the net 1:44 into the third. Andrew Eno was credited with an assist.

“You go from a one-goal game, and we are all over them to a two-goal game,” Smith said. “We can’t get the bounces as is and you are kind of snake bit trying to score. Yeah, it was deflating, I am not going to lie. Spencer made some good stops too. It all washes out in the in.”

Granholm added the empty netter with ten seconds remaining.

“We went into that third period in the second intermission saying we need to get more pucks on net,” Nate Granholm.

Kirk made 20 saves for the victory while Desrochers 21 saves.

“Riley had a good third period, I thought the whole team, we mad an adjustment in our forecheck and I thought we had a good third period.”
