As many as six Hockey East schools showed some level of interest in the fall and this winter, but ultimately Doherty decided on decided on attending the University of Maine beginning next season.

“It was probably a more difficult decision, and I didn’t have much time, this time, around,” said Doherty of the recruiting process on the second go around. “At the same time, I couldn’t rush it and pick the first school that gave me a (scholarship) offer. The decision was more difficult this time because I had to look at the details seeing what was the best fit for my family and me.”

The 6-foot-0, 185-pound forward from Portsmouth, R.I, wouldn’t disclose why he left Brown. He originally committed to his hometown university in November 2013.

Doherty visited Maine last weekend when the University of Connecticut came to town for a two-game set.

“Walking around the players, seeing the rink, I saw a game against UConn, and I thought the atmosphere was unbelievable, and the students weren’t even there,” Doherty said. “So, I think that says a lot and basically I saw myself as a student-athlete there. I can’t wait for the next four years.”

After leaving Brown, he returned to the Boston Jr. Bruins of the USPHL Premier League where he spent the past two seasons. In 21 games this season, he has 14 goals and 21 assists for the 26-7-1 Jr. Bruins squad.

He hopes to get stronger and work on his skating this upcoming off-season.

He said he was welcomed back to the Jr. Bruins with open arms.

“The coaches were very good to me and got me in touch with schools,” Doherty said. “I still had a lot of teammates from last year that were still on the team this year, so it was pretty good to be back with them. It’s been great ever since.”

Doherty’s coming to Maine is contingent upon his acceptance into the school and meeting NCAA eligibility requirements.
