Bowdoin’s Cronin blanks Williams

Cody Todesco scored early in the second period while Peter Cronin blanked the Williams offense leading the Bowdoin men’s ice hockey team to a 1-0 Friday night win over the visiting Ephs at Sid Watson Arena.

Williams (10-4-1, 6-2-1 NESCAC) entered Friday’s conference game as the top seed in NESCAC play. The Polar Bears collected their second win of the season over a nationally ranked opponent to improve to to 6-7-3 (3-5-3 NESCAC) on the year.

Mitch Barrington denied consecutive bids on a Williams 2-on-1 breakaway midway through the first. Michael Lata took a feed directly in front the crease, but Cronin played the puck as Lata pulled left and denied the Ephs opportunity with 30 seconds remaining.

Todesco put Bowdoin ahead 1-0 just 36 seconds into the second period. Spencer Antunez wrapped behind Williams’ net, with the puck squirting out to Chris Wallace who waited low in the right faceoff circle. Wallace fed Todesco in the high slot for open shot to beat Michael Pinios.
Zander Masucci looked to even the game off a wraparound to the right post, but Cronin closed the door on the senior captain with a diving stick save.

With 3:30 remaining C.J. Shugart picked the puck off a Bowdoin defender in the Polar Bears’ zone and fired off a shot that Cronin gloved out of the air. One minute later Pinios denied Brendan Conroywith a last second save as the puck looked for the left pipe.

Cronin ended the day with 33 stops to collect the shutout victory. Pinios had 29 saves for the Ephs.
