Colby shoot down Endicott in Colby/Bowdoin Classic

BRUNSWICK – It’s been a slow start for the Colby Mules top line in the early going in the 2015-16 season, but Sunday they helped lead the Mules to the 5-2 win over the Endicott College Gulls at Sidney J. Watson Arena in Brunswick.

Cam MacDonald and Nick O’Conner each had a goal while EJ Rauseo had an assist. MacDonald also had an assist.

“I thought our top line played well,” Colby coach Blaise MacDonald said. “They managed the game pretty well. As the game went on, I thought they got stronger and stronger and pretty good puck protection. They did a nice job, they got a power play goal, Cam MacDonald got that. It was a pretty solid effort out of that line.”

The Mules (1-2-1) struck first, a minute after their first power play of the afternoon ended when Scott Fenwick put home a rebound at the top the crease at the 11:24 mark. The assists went to Jonathan Sdao and Jack Burton.

The scoring picked up in the second period. Colby went up 2-0 when Nick O’Connor was able to wrap the puck around at the 8:58 mark with Cam MacDonald picking up the lone assist.

“It was exciting to see a lot of guys get their first career goals,” Blaise MacDonald said. “Scott Fenwick got a goal, and John Rourke got a goal today for his first career goal and Nick O’Connor. That was really nice to see, and that will give those guys confidence moving forward.”

Ross Olsson set up Endicott’s (5-2-2) lone goal of the period when his shot from the left circle couldn’t be controlled by Emerson Verrier and Carter Horwitz, who was coming hard down the right wing had a half-open net. The goal came with 8:47 remaining in the middle frame.

Colby went into the locker room with a three-goal lead when Cam MacDonald scored a power-play marker with 7:17 remaining in the period while EJ Rausseo picked up the lone assist. With 33 seconds remaining in the period, Jonathan Sdao found the back of the net with Griffin McFadden notching the lone assist.

“That’s what good teams do. You need to respond,” MacDonald said. “It was a good word you used. The game of hockey, it’s never a straight line. There are peaks and valleys, so it’s the team that can manage those ebbs and flow of that is usually going to win.

Colby was 1-for-4 with the man advantage while Endicott was scoreless on their four chances.

Josh Bowes cut into Colby’s lead as he scored from the slot 11:36 into the third period. Alex Marcinek and Alexander Bonito were given credit with the assists.

John Rourke scored his first career to put Colby up 5-2 with 5:16 remaining in the game. Colin Reilly and Dan Dupont set the goal up.
