USM women’s hockey team fall at home to UMass-Boston

Sophomore Katie Barry had a goal and an assist as the visiting University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 in a New England Hockey Conference game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the second straight for the Beacons, and leveled their overall record at 4-4. The Beacons are now 4-2 in league play. The Huskies slipped to 1-4-1 overall and in the conference.

Barry netted an insurance goal 4:39 into the third period to give the visitors a two-goal cushion. She picked up an assist on the first goal of the game scored by rookie Edy Moritz at 8:39 of the opening period.

UMB sophomore goalie Rachel Myette earned her third win of the season stopping 16 shots. Sophomore Katie Jeter scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the first period.

Junior Lynn Kozlowski had the lone goal for the Huskies. Senior goalie Nia Kelly made 22 saves.

Moritz netted her first goal of the season with a shot from the left wing circle that beat Kelly. Barry and senior Kristina Bove set up the opportunity. Jeter doubled the Beacons’ advantage just over three minutes later when she found the net from the top of the left wing circle. Senior Alexandra Karlis and junior Kat Armstrong set up Jeter.

Kozlowski chopped the deficit in half as she took a pass out from behind the net by sophomore Emilee Burris and beat Myette to the near post from 10 feet out.

The teams played through a scoreless second period before Barry added her first goal of the season, potting the rebound of senior Alexa Cappione’s shot that Kelly stopped. The rebound went out to Barry and she deposited the puck into the open side.

Southern Maine is on the road on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game at Colby College. UMass Boston will travel to Colby on November 29 (2:00 p.m.) for its next game.
