UMaine women’s hockey team topples Brown in Auburn

The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team defeated Brown by a score of 4-0 in front of a sellout crowd at the Norway Savings Bank arena on Friday evening.

Jillian Langtry and Brooke Stacey each added a goal and an assist in the victory. Goaltender Meghann Treacy made 14 saves in the shutout victory, improving her overall record to 3-4-0

The Black Bears dominated the first 20-minutes of play, out-shooting Brown 13-4 and hitting two posts before finally cashing in on the game’s first goal late in the first period. Jillian Langtry controlled the puck in the Brown zone before sliding a pass to Cassidy Herman. Herman ripped a shot past Brown goaltender Monica Elvin, 15:50 into the period, giving Maine a 1-0 edge. Taylor Landry added an assist on the goal.

Maine added to its lead with a power play goal in the second period. It only took nine seconds into the man-advantage for the Black Bears to capitalize. Brooke Stacey won the draw back to Mikayla Rogers who found Alyson Matteau. Matteau found the back of the net for the first time in her Maine career to give the Black Bears a 2-0 advantage.

After killing off a two-man advantage, followed by a double-minor, the Black Bears added a pair of goals to their lead in the third period. Maine netted a pair of goals in the final minute, putting the game out of reach for Brown. Brooke Stacey tallied her second goal of the year, finding the empty net from the blue-line. With four seconds remaining in regulation, Jillian Langtry forced a turnover and skated in, sneaking a back-hand shot past Elvin, securing a 4-0 victory.

Maine held a 33-14 edge in shots on goal while finishing 1-5 on the power play and shutting Brown out on seven power play opportunities.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday evening when they host Brown in the weekend finale at Alfond Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
