LEWISTON – Yale was Ted Hart’s school of choice to further his academic and hockey career.

That opportunity opened up earlier this year for the Cumberland native when he decided not to attend Providence College in which he committed in January of 2014.

“I always wanted to go to Yale as my first choice, but the last two years they weren’t really interested,” Ted Hart said. “I did a visit, but there was no offer. I was really happy with Providence and my decision, but then this year, I committed for the fall of 2015 but there was a little miscommunication about when I was going to come in. They hoped I was going to do a year of juniors. Once I heard I wasn’t really that wanted for 2015, I started to look at different options.”

Once he decommitted Yale was one of the schools who reached out to him. With the importance of school to the family, he was only looking at Ivy League schools.

“I think it’s very important to my family, it’s kind of why one of the reasons we choice to go to Philips Exeter Academy because we knew we would get a great education,” Hart said why he and two brothers Kevin and Brian went to Philips Exeter.

The 5-foot-11, 172-pound, 19-year-old forward spent the previous two seasons with Philips Exeter Academy after leading Greely High School to back-to-back Class B State Championships in 2012 and 2013.

This season he had 26 goals and 23 assists in 30 games after he put up 10 goals and 14 assists in 28 games in 2013-14.

After adjusting to the speed of the prep game, he will have to make another adjustment to the Division I game.

“We have talked a little bit,” Hart said of what the Yale coaching staff expects next season. “They know it’s a big jump right from prep school to college. They are going to work with me, but they hope I can get into the lineup and contribute by the end of the year.”

Kevin, who went to Providence and Brian, who went to Harvard, gave their younger brother some ribbing on his choice.

“Kevin was a little upset I ended up leaving Providence,” Ted said. “Brian was a little upset I went to his rival, but they are both supportive (of my decision.)”
