Hawks shutout USM in women’s hockey

Saint Anselm scored three times in the first period en route to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine women’s hockey team in ECAC East Women’s play Saturday afternoon at USM Ice Arena.

Saint Anselm improves to 5-1-0 overall (3-1-0 ECAC East) on the season while USM drops to 1-3-0 overall (1-3-0 ECAC East) for the year.

Alison Quinn gave Saint Anselm all the offense it needed just 1:26 into the period with her third goal of the season. She added an insurance goal only 2:25 later, snapping a one-timer by Southern Maine netminder Liz Bergstrom.

Lindsey Brown stopped all 11 shots for the shutout for her second shutout of the season, improving to 3-0-0 on the year.

With 4:45 left in the opening frame, Jessica Galiczewski fired a shot from that blueline, beating Bergstrom through a screen to extend St. A’s lead, 3-0.

Bergstrom was solid the rest of the game, stopping 16 of 19 shots for the loss.

USM is back in action next Friday when they host in state rival UNE in Gorham.

Saint Michael’s College – 3; University of New England – 2 OT

Amanda Kempainen scored midway through the overtime period, lifting Saint Michael’s past the University of New England, 3-2, in ECAC East women’s action at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford.

Saint Michael’s earn its first win of the season to improve its record to 1-4-0 overall; 1-3-0 ECAC East while the University of New England drop to 2-3-0; 1-3-0 ECAC East.

UNE trailed 2-0 when Samantha Pratt scored her first goal of the season at the 11:44 mark of the second period. Melissa Boudreau was credited with an assist on the play.

Early in the third period, UNE went on a power play and capitalized as Shannon Smith found the back of the net, beating goaltender Tina Frasca, tying the game 2-2.

In overtime, Amanda Kempainen found a loose puck and beat Samantha Scobee for the game-winner just 2:50 into the extra frame.

Frasca finished with 34 saves in the victory.

Saint Michael’s jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period, beginning with Erin Dwyer’s second of the season at the 2:14 mark of the opening frame. Just over three minutes later, at 5:47, Kempainen scored his first of the afternoon as he finished with two goals for the game.

Scobee dropped to 1-1-0 on the season after stopping 14 shots in the game.

Middlebury – 7; Colby College – 1

Allie Aiello scored twice for Middlebury College as they toppled Colby College 7-1 Saturday evening in Middlebury, Vt.

Hannah Bielawski and Emily Fluke each finished with a goal and two assists for Middlebury.

Nikki Donato had the lone goal for the Colby.

Both teams will meet again Sunday in Middlebury.

Middlebury took a 1-0 lead 1:31 into the game with a power-play goal. Carly Watson’s shot from the right point was stopped by Angelica Crites, before Fluke pounced on the rebound.

Aiello snapped a wrist shot from the right circle with 2:46 left in the period to extend the lead, 2-0, after 20 minutes of play.

The Panthers scored the only goal of the second period when Elizabeth Wulf jumped on the rebound and found the back of the net extending the lead, 3-0.

The flood gates opened in the third period for Middlebury as Carly Watson started the scoring spree at the 4:41 mark of the period.

Nikki Donato tallied the only goal for Colby at 11:04 of the third period with an open net from the high slot, beating Panthers’ goalie Annabelle Jones (10 saves).

Bielawski answered just 1:21 later with a one-timer from Kelly Sherman to give her team a 5-1 lead.

Aiello and Victoria Lavin capped off the scoring for Middlebury with goals only 50 seconds apart to give the Panthers a commanding 7-1 lead.

Crites finished with 24 saves in the loss.
