Darcy commits to UNH

The 15-year-old defenseman from South Berwick committed to the Wildcats last month for the fall of 2015 or 2016.
“This will be his second year. Obviously, he was a huge impact player for us,” said Berwick Academy Bulldogs head coach Andy Lathrop. “He was actually the MVP of our team and we had other good players as well.
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound defenseman had five goals and 17 assists in 21 games last year for the Bulldogs.
“He’s very intelligent, he’s really smooth skater and very good with the puck,” stated Lathrop. “We classify him as a puck moving defenseman and he’s very difficult to get the puck away from him.”
There are not many holes in Darcy’s game for players of his age.
“Last year, the one thing I could find wrong in his game last year was his shot and that’s because he’s a young (kid),” Lathrop added. “I have seen a difference this summer; he’s getting bigger and stronger. That’s the key, getting bigger and stronger to play at the next level.”
Lathrop said as good as he is as a hockey player; he’s a better kid off the ice.
“In the bigger picture, he’s a better human being, a super kid,” Lathrop said. “This attention he’s getting and everything has been tough on him too because he’s humble. He doesn’t like the spotlight and he doesn’t like all the attention around him.”
Right now the plan is to graduate from Berwick Academy.
“He may need a year of junior after he graduates, but if he’s ready I am sure (UNH) will take him.”
