Three more assigned to Portland

The Coyotes continue to trim their roster on Saturday when they assigned three more players to the Pirates.

Goaltender Justin Pogge and defensemen Dean Arsene and Tyler Eckford were assigned to Portland.

Pogge spent last season with the Charlotte Checkers and is expected to battle for ice time in net with Curtis McElhinney. In 48 games, Pogge posted a 22-18-4 record with a 3.12GAA and a .907 save percentage.

Arsene is another veteran expected to make an impact on the roster as he is the likely captain of the franchise. The Murrayville, BC native has been the captain of the team AHL teams he’s competed on (Hershey, Springfield and Peoria), guiding the Bears to a pair of Calder Cup championships.

Along with Arsene, Eckford will add more toughness on the blueline at 6-1, 200-pounds.

The Coyotes have also assigned defenseman Brandon Gormley to the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, leaving 31 players left in training camp.

As many as 30 players are expected on Monday as the Pirates open training camp at the Cumberland County Civic Center including former Pirates Jimmy Bonneau and Igor Gongalsky.

Also expected at camp is forward and tough guy Ryan Hollweg, which should add some fireworks to practice with Bonneau and Gongalsky.

The Coyotes are expected to make another round of cuts on Sunday, a night after falling to the San Jose Sharks, 1-0.
