Deadline for relocation request passes in QMJHL

It appears at least for now the Lewiston Maineiacs are staying put and will continue to call the Androscoggin Bank Colisee home.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announced today that none of their 18 members have applied relocation by the end of the Jan. 31 deadline despite speculation regarding the movement of three franchises in particular including the Maineiacs.

“Although a number of reports have been published over the past few weeks, not a single Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team submitted a request to sell or relocate on January 31st,”said Commissioner Gilles Courteau in a press release.

“Guidelines are outlined in our Constitution and our members are well-aware of the process regarding these types of requests.”

Despite the Jan. 31 deadline, a team could still apply for relocation by requesting an extension with the QMJHL, although, that is not expected to be the case.

Karl Jahnke, Director of Media Relations, responded to an email sent by Maine Hockey Journal saying that “No extensions were granted. We are status quo for next season.”

Maineiacs’ President and Governor Bill Schurman indicated to the Lewiston Sun Journal that he didn’t expect the team to file for relocation or an extension to relocate.

When contacted by Maine Hockey Journal, Schurman gave this response by email.

“Everyone in this organization from volunteers to staff, to players to our partners are, and have been working overtime to try and obtain enough support to pay our bills like any and all business must do,” wrote Schurman. “We have laid no blame, we have given no threats or ultimatums, and I have accepted responsibility for the amounts of support our product attracts.”

“We have promised any and all concerned that if anything should change with our business model here in Lewiston we would communicate in an appropriate and professional manner.”

Rumors of the Maineiacs demise have been a yearly occurrence since 2009 when the team tried to move to Boisbriand, Quebec. The team has lost money every year in its eight-year existence in Lewiston since relocating from Sherbrooke, Quebec, and according the Sun Journal the team will have projected losses totaling nearly $4 million dollars.

Tonight, the Maineiacs will hold their Season Ticket Holder Appreciation night where ticket holders will have a chance to “name their own price” and purchase up to four tickets for tonight’s game for whatever price they choose to pay (minimum box office fee of $1.00 per ticket).
