Bowdoin’s Holtz named MHJ top star

Bowdoin College sophomore forward Kayte Holtz has been named this week’s No. 1 star in Maine Hockey Journal’s Three Stars of the Week.

Last week, Holtz had an impressive week with five-goal outburst in two games as the Polar Bears went 1-0-1.

On Wednesday, Bowdoin overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 tie against New England College, beginning with her third period goal just over a minute into the period.

The New Berlin, Wisconsin native followed that up with a four-goal performance on Saturday in a convincing 6-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine, which included a game-winning shorthanded goal and a power play goal.

Her four goals were the most scored by player in the women’s hockey program at Bowdoin since 2005 when Meghan Gilles scored four times against Lake Forest.

For her effort, Holtz was named this week’s NESCAC Player of the Week.

Holtz leads all NESCAC players in goals (12) and points (16). In just 37 career games, Holtz has 27 goals and 16 assists for 43 points.

Biddeford High School forward Brady Fleurent is this week’s No. 2 star after scoring three goals and two assists in a 5-1 win over rival Thornton Academy.

It was a game that had all the intrigue, but by the end of the night there was little left, only a few crumbs after Fleurent and linemate Bryan Dallaire were finished.

Thornton was first on the board, but it was a short-lived lead – 54 seconds later to be exact – as Fleurent blasted a shot from the left point to tie the game at 1-1.

Dallaire scored to make it 2-1 when he sent a snap shot by Thornton goalie Jay Finch in the second period. Of course, Fleurent assisted on the play.

Fleurent made it 3-1 when he pick pocketed a Thornton defender only three minutes later. By then, the rout was on as he finished the hat trick with the Tigers fourth goal.

Dallaire, who played for Thornton last season, has found instant chemistry playing with Fleurent, which proven by the point production of each player in the game.

“We’re just like each other, we just find each other, so it’s pretty easy to play with him, he’s a great player” said Fleurent.

Lewiston Maineiacs forward Michael Chaput showed why he will be in a Philadelphia Flyers uniform someday sooner rather than later in being named No. 3 star of the week.

In three games, Chaput scored five goals, two assists for seven points to help guide the Maineiacs to a 3-0-0 record during a seven day span. This comes on top of QMJHL trade deadline day and playing on a shorten roster with World Jr. Championship and World U-17 Challenge.

The Maineiacs as a team was impressive last week with 19 goals in three games, starting with Tuesday’s 7-0 drubbing at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee against the Drummondville Voltigeurs. Chaput chipped with a goal and an assist in the game.

Chaput added two goals on Friday night when Rouyn-Noranda came to town as the Maineiacs followed Tuesday’s performance with a 6-2 victory.

Chaput wasn’t finished as he recorded two goals and an assist in another six-goal outburst by the Maineiacs against Rouyn-Noranda.

In 40 games, Chaput has 16 goals, 23 assists for 39 points with a plus-12 rating.
