Ouellette earns honor as Maine climb in polls; Dumoulin to be named to US roster

Orono, ME – The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team moved up in the polls on Monday and freshman goaltender Martin Ouellette earned himself the Hockey East Rookie of the Week after a very solid performance in the series against Hockey East foes Providence College.

The Black Bears moved up one spot in the poll to No. 8, while making the jumping up three spots in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine to the No. 6 position.

After the weekend series against Providence, the Black Bears improved their record to 7-3-4 overall; (5-2-2 in Hockey East), moving them to fourth place in league standings behind Merrimack.

The Black Bears ended Friday night’s contest in a 3-3 tie, but it seemed to knock the rust off some of their top scorers. Spencer Abbott picked up two goals and an assist, giving him three points on the night and he sits atop the team with 21 points.

Joey Diamond continued to assert his dominance in front of the net when he found his seventh goal of the season to give him 13 points.

It was Saturday when Maine truly shined as goalie Martin Ouellette shined making 32 saves for his first career collegiate shutout in only his second game of the year in a 5-0 win for Maine.

The freshman is 1-0-1 on the season with a 1.44 GAA and a .941 save percentage on the season.

The Black Bears finally get to return home when they play recently ranked No. 3 University of New Hampshire on Friday at Alfond Arena.

UNH will bring with them the top two scorers in Hockey East with Paul Thompson and Mike Sislo.

On Sunday the Black Bears will face UMass-Amherst at 4:00 pm.

Biddeford native Brian Dumoulin will be named to US Under-20 National Team during a press conference scheduled for tomorrow in Buffalo, NY as USA Hockey announces their preliminary roster for the upcoming World Junior Championship, which is taking place in Buffalo.

Dumoulin in his sophomore season with the Boston College Eagles has played in 16 games where he has 10 points on the season with a plus-10 rating.
