Buffalo St. shutout USM to win the Skidmore Invitational

Buffalo State College outscored the Univ. of Southern Maine men’s ice hockey team, 3-0, today to claim the championship game of the Skidmore College Invitational Tournament.

The Bengals scored a goal in each period and freshman goaltender Kevin Carr stopped all 24 shots he faced for the victory.

Buffalo State freshman Bill Strakosch scored the first goal of the game, his first of the season, with 1:03 left in the opening period. Buffalo scored again just 1:15 into the second with a goal from senior Nick Petriello. The two teams skated scoreless for the remainder of the second and most of the third period.

The Huskies went on a late game power play and pulled their goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage, but this did not turn out as they had hoped. Buffalo State sophomore Trevor McKinney found the empty net with 1:31 left in the game for the Bengals third goal.

USM freshman goaltender Braely Torris turned away 26 of the shots he faced, but this was not enough as the Huskies had to settle for second place in the Skidmore Invitational Tournament. Earlier in the afternoon, hosts Skidmore Thoroughbreds defeated the Elmira Soaring Eagles 4-2 to claim third place in their tournament. The Huskies return to home ice this Friday (December 3rd) to face off in a 7pm game against the Middlebury Panthers.
