Maine continues to climb in polls; Diamond named HE player of the week

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team continued to move up in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls moving to the No. 3 spot. Maine follows fellow Hockey East team Boston University which fell to No. 2 this week and to the newly ranked No.1 Minnesota-Duluth.

The weekend series between the Black Bears and Northeastern had its share of great moments and great players.
Standing out from the crowd was Maine’s Joey Diamond, a sophomore forward and native of Long Beach, New York. Diamond was awarded the Hockey East Player of the Week for his game changing performances against the Huskies.

Diamond earned three points (2G, 1A) in the weekend series, two points were game-changing goals in both games. Friday night, Diamond scored the game-winning goal, and on Saturday, he used his physical play to score the all important game-tying goal.

After sweeping Northeastern at home, the Black Bears will be heading to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Hockey East rival Boston College. These two teams will be meeting for the first time since the Eagles beat Maine in last year’s Hockey East Championship game 7-6 in OT.
