Maineiacs sweep away Baie Comeau in weekend series
- Updated: October 17, 2010
The Lewiston MAINEiacs (8-5-0-2, 18 pts) completed a weekend road sweep of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar (1-10-0-2, 4pts) by scoring four times in final 6:36 en route to a 5-2 victory at the Centre Henry-Leonard on Sunday afternoon.
Etienne Brodeur paced the attack as he registered two goals and an assist in what proved to be Lewiston’s third straight victory.
Special teams for Lewiston proved crucial yet again, as the penalty kill went a perfect eight-for-eight a day removed from a seven-for-seven performance. Meanwhile the power play unit scored twice in six tries with the man-advantage.
As was the case in Saturday’s affair Baie-Comeau struck first with an early first period goal on Sunday. Frederick Gamelin deflected a shot from Alexandre Chenevert for his first goal of the season to give the Drakkar a 1-0 lead at 5:21.
The lead would hold until the final minute of the period when Olivier Dame-Malka’s slap shot off a feed from Cameron Critchlow rang the post and in to knot the game at one.
After a scoreless second period, Lewiston erupted for four goals in the third period.
The first two came as a result of a double-minor assessed to Jean-Philippe Caron for roughing. Brodeur broke the 1-1 tie with his first goal of the night at 13:24 before assisting Stefan Fournier’s fifth goal of the season at 15:11.
Lewiston’s breakout player wasn’t done there, as Brodeur would tack on his 11th goal of the season under two minutes later to give the MAINEiacs a comfortable 4-1 lead.
At 17:07 Baie-Comeau’s Marc-Olivier Mimar scored to make it a two-goal game, but any chance of a comeback was put to rest after Pierre-Olivier Morin tucked away yet another Lewiston goal with under a minute and a half remaining to make it a 5-2 game.
Nicholas Champion (9-4-2) earned the win for Lewiston as he stopped 18 shots on 20 attempts to outduel Jason Missiaen (0-5-1) for the second consecutive game. Missiaen saved 22 of the 27 shots he faced.
NOTES: The Lewiston MAINEiacs return home from their brief two-game road trip on Wednesday night to take on the Shawinigan Cataractes at 7:00 from the Androscoggin Bank Colisee…the attendance for today’s game was 1,474
