Morin, MAINEiacs down Drakkar 3-1
- Updated: October 16, 2010
The Lewiston MAINEiacs (7-5-0-2, 16 pts) scored three unanswered goals and were a perfect seven-for-seven on the penalty kill to defeat the Baie-Comeau Drakkar (1-9-0-2, 4 pts) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
With Lewiston on the power play and the game knotted at 1-1 at 12:58 in the third period, Pierre-Oliver Morin scored his second goal of the season to give the MAINEiacs the 2-1 advantage. Michael Chaput and Olivier Dame-Malka would collect assists on the eventual game-winner.
Lewiston and Baie-Comeau traded goals in the first period. The Drakkar struck first at 9:53 of the first period on Pierrick Martel’s eighth goal of the season. Less than three minutes later Jess Tanguy finished on the backhand off a feed from Stefan Fournier to provide an answer for Lewiston and equalize the score, 1-1.
The second period remained scoreless thanks in large part to the efforts of the Lewiston penalty kill that spoiled four Baie-Comeau man-advantages. Meanwhile, the Baie-Comeau penalty-killing unit stifled a pair of five-on-fours.
Late in the third period the Lewiston penalty kill was put to the test one last time. With 2:29 left in regulation Lewiston was able to fend off a seventh and final penalty to preserve the 2-1 lead.
With three seconds remaining in the game Cameron Critchlow tucked away an empty net goal to seal a 3-1 Lewiston victory.
Both goaltenders put in valiant efforts on Saturday afternoon. For Lewiston, Nicholas Champion (8-4-2) picked up the win making 27 saves on 28 shots. His counterpart Jason Missiaen (0-4-1) suffered the loss for Baie-Comeau despite a 37 save effort on 39 shots.
NOTES: Lewiston and Baie-Comeau will get back at it Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm to conclude the brief two-game trip for the MAINEiacs…the attendance for this afternoon’s game was 1,723.
