Whitmore, Stuart and Conboy all clear waivers

Derek Whitmore, Colin Stuart and Tim Conboy have all cleared waivers and been assigned to the Portland Pirates by the Buffalo Sabres.

Whitmore has played the last two seasons for the Pirates, and a lot will be expected from the 25-year old native of Greece, NY. Last season, he set career highs in goals (18), assists (16) and points with 34 points.

He was the lone bright spot for the Pirates during the Calder Cup playoffs, scoring two goals, and an assist as the Manchester Monarchs defeated Portland in four straight games.

Stuart was signed as a free agent by the Sabres in August, providing the Pirates will a veteran presence.

In five seasons in the AHL, the Rochester MN native has 65 goals, 58 assists for 123 points as a Calder Cup championship as a member of the 2007-’08 Chicago Wolves.

Stuart has played in 51 NHL games with Atlanta, scoring eight goals and five assists for 13 points.

Tim Conboy was a little bit of a surprise signing by the Sabres considering the past history between him and Sabres prospect Nathan Gerbe, which resulted in melee at the HSBC Arena in Feb. ’09.

Since then, the two have publically said that they smoothed over the relationship and have moved on.

Not known for his scoring production, scoring 12 goals, 31 assists in five AHL seasons, Conboy will need to provide a physical presence on the ice, one that will be lost with the departure of defenseman Mike Weber.

Buffalo still has 35 players in camp and is expected to make another round of player cuts after they complete their exhibition schedule on Sunday.

NOTES: Training camp will begin tomorrow with a light skate at Portland Ice Arena starting at 10am. The first official practice will begin on Saturday evening at 6pm at PIA.
