Critchlow earns QMJHL top honors

What a week for Lewiston Maineiacs forward Cameron Critchlow. Last Wednesday, he was named the team’s captain and on Tuesday, he was named the QMJHL’s first star after posting six points this past weekend.

“It was my best weekend in my junior career,” said Critchlow.

The 19-year old began the weekend on Friday night, when he netted his first career hat trick. He also added an assist in the opening contest, giving him four points for night. Then, on Saturday night, Critchlow found the scoresheet again, picking up assists on both of Lewiston’s goals.

Just like Etienne Brodeur, who also had a four points (3 goals, 1 assist) this past weekend, Critchlow knew he had to step up against Rimouski.

“It’s easier to get the ball rolling the first game if you play well,” Critchlow said. “When the points are coming, you need to keep working hard. “You need to take care of your end, things will come at the other end.

With six players at NHL camps, it provided Critchlow to show his offensive prowess.

“With guys being away at camps, we talked about that before the first game,” he added. “There will be a lot of opportunities for different guys who may not get the opportunity to step up as often.”

There was no added pressure with the captain’s “C” on his chest.

“I didn’t really think about it because my role has always been the same,” he added. “Nothing has changed at all, it’s a new season and we started with a win.”

“Unfortunately on Saturday, we didn’t get the win.”

Assistants faced off

Pierre-Olivier Morin got the best of Samuel Finn Monday night as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-2 at the Penticton Young Stars Prospects Tournament in Pentiction, BC. Morin had a goal and was a +2. Finn didn’t factor in on the scoresheet.

Vancouver next game is against the Anaheim Ducks rookies on Wednesday at 7 pm The Sharks will take on number one overall pick Taylor Hall and the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday at 10:30pm. All games are being streamed here for free.
