Sabres re-sign Matt Ellis

In another depth move by the Buffalo Sabres, they have re-signed forward Matt Ellis to one-year contract.

Ellis, 29, will be entering his third season with the Sabres after being claimed on waivers from the Los Angeles Kings. He began his stint in the Sabres organization with the Portland Pirates; scoring four points (2g, 2a) in 12 games.

In 117 games with the Sabres, he scored 10 goals, 15 assists for 25 points including career highs in games played (72), points (13) and assists (10), last season.

The Sabres signing of Ellis is an intriguing one because it adds another forward to the growing list of players, who are fighting for jobs within the Sabres lineup, itself.

It’s almost assured somebody isn’t going to be overly enthused when they are cut from the big club and assigned to Portland.

Namely, there are several players are in that category right now including Mark Mancari, Nathan Gerbe, Tyler Ennis and even Matt Ellis could be considered in that grouping pending his contract structure.

Ennis and Ellis are the most likely candidates to earn spots on the roster with the Sabres, but when camp opens in two weeks, it will be a competitive camp to say the least.
