Pirates release 2010-’11 schedule

After several weeks of delays, the 2010 – ’11 schedule for the Portland Pirates was released this afternoon.

The schedule had been held up because of delays in the NBA schedule, several teams (Charlotte, Houston, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City and San Antonio) share arenas with NBA franchises, and planning couldn’t begin until the NBA schedule was finalized.

The Pirates will begin their season at the Cumberland County Civic Center on October 9 against the Manchester Monarchs in a rematch of last year’s playoff opponent.

Portland will play six of their first eight games at home; their first road game will take place on Oct. 17 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

For the first time since the 1996-’97 season when they played the Carolina Monarchs, the Pirates play a team in North Carolina when they travel to Charlotte, NC to take on the Charlotte Checkers, the new AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday Nov. 2 and Nov. 3.

The Pirates are introducing a new start time for midweek games, starting 30 minutes earlier than in prior seasons. The Pirates claim that an earlier start time will allow more families to attend the games and still get home at an earlier time as well as local companies to take advantage of the Pirates new corporate initiatives.

Portland’s road schedule isn’t as aggressive as in years past as the Pirates longest trip will happen at the beginning of the season when they travel to Norfolk, VA and Charlotte, NC for four games in a five day stretch.

The Pirates will play three matinee games this season, two at 1pm – Monday, Oct. 11 vs. Charlotte and Monday Feb. 21 vs. Hartford – and another at 11am on Mar. 22 against Worcester.

The season will end on Sunday, Apr. 11, 2011 at home against the Springfield Falcons. Portland will play five of their last seven games on the road.
