Wanvig signs with German team
- Updated: June 14, 2010
The Portland Pirates have lost another veteran to an overseas team after forward Kyle Wanvig signed with the Augsburger Panthers of the German Elite League.
Wanvig, 29, played 63 games with the Pirates last season, scoring 13 goals, 25 points for 38 points. The 6-2, 210-pound native from Calgary, Alberta began the year in Portland as a tryout, before finally getting an AHL contract from the Buffalo Sabres, the Pirates NHL parent team, midway into the season.
Wanvig joins another Pirates forward Phillip Gogulla, who left the organization to return to his old team, Cologne, in Germany.
A second round draft pick (#36 overall) of the Minnesota Wild in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Wanvig won a Calder Cup with the Houston Aeros in 2003.
