Black Bears give Whitehead a contract extension

After an impressive season, University of Maine head coach Tim Whitehead has received a contract extension that will see him behind the Black Bears bench for at least four more seasons.

Whitehead has one more year left on his original contract which will expire on June 30, 2011.

In nine seasons with the Black Bears, Whitehead has a record of 199-126-36 with eight trips to the Hockey East tournament, including last year where UMaine fell short in the championship game, and four Frozen Four appearances, getting to the national championship game twice.

For the first time in nearly three years, UMaine finished the season at a nationally ranked at No. 18 according to the Division I College Poll.
