Diamond Named Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week

University of Maine freshman forward Joey Diamond (Long Beach, N.Y.) was named the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Week on Monday. Diamond had an outstanding weekend for the Black Bears at the Hockey East Tournament at
the TD Garden in Boston.

On Friday in Maine’s 5-2 win over Boston University, Diamond scored a highlight reel goal where he eluded his defender, faked out Boston University goalie Kieran Millan and backhanded the puck into the net.

On Saturday, Diamond had two goals an an assist in Maine’s 7-6 overtime loss to Boston College. Diamond tied the game at 2-2 just 36 seconds after Matt Lombardi had given Boston College a 2-1 lead, late in the first period. He then assisted on a goal by Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta) at 15:04 of the second period to pull Maine to within one goal at 4-3.

Diamond tied the game at 6-6 with 27 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. The goal was featured on ESPN’s Top-10 Plays of the Day at number eight.

For his efforts in the two games, Diamond earned a spot on the Hockey East All-Tournament Team.

Diamond finished the season with nine goals and three assists for 12 points.
