Maine’s O’Neill Named Hockey East Player of the Week

WAKEFIELD, Mass. — University of Maine sophomore defenseman Will O’Neill (Salem, Mass.) was named the Athletic Republic Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday, March 15. It is the first Player of the Week honor for O’Neill this season.

O’Neill scored two goals and added an assist in Maine’s third and decisive game of its Hockey East quarterfinals series with UMass Lowell. He scored his first goal of the game at 13:44 of the second period on the power play to tie the score at 1-1. O’Neill then tied the game a second time with just 4:48 remaining in regulation to force overtime.

O’Neill then assisted on the game-winning goal by Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta) 5:10 into overtime, which sent the Black Bears to the Hockey East semifinals.

O’Neill ranks fourth on the team in scoring with eight goals and 23 assists for 31 points. His 0.84 points per game rank eighth in the nation among defensemen.

O’Neill and the Black Bears return to action on Friday, March 19 when they face Boston University in the Hockey East semifinals at the TD Garden in Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 PM.
