Trevor Fleurent captures Travis Roy Award

Lewiston, ME – Trevor Fleurent, a four-year varsity player and  three-time Class A State Champion, is the 2010 Travis Roy Award Winner.

Fleurent capped off the 2009-2010 high school hockey season by winning the the 15th Annual Travis Roy Award which is presented to the most outstanding senior hockey player in Class A Hockey.

The other three finalists were goaltender Rick Hebb from Thornton Academy, defenseman Nick George from Bangor High School, and forward Mat Gordon out of Edward Little High School.

“It’s an honor,” said Trevor Fleurent. “There are so many great players in Maine, and to be honored at the top with them, it’s an accomplishment.”

“The thing about Trevor is, whoever we play against, he has two or three friends on the other team,” said Biddeford Head Coach Rich Reissfelder. “Before the game and after the game, they are always hugging each other and saying hi.”

Trevor has recorded 141 points in his career at Biddeford, including 33 goals and 27 assists this season.

“On the ice, he’s one of those rare kids that make everyone around him better,”  Reissfelder added. “He’s a kid that brings teams together, which is great. He’s a coaches dream from so many different angles.”

Just two years earlier, Fleurent’s neighbor, Tony Dube won the 2008 Travis Roy Award and helped Fleurent throughout the Travis Roy process

“I owe him a lot,” Fleurent stated. “He helped me with my speech.”

“Thank You Tony.”

Fleurent is Biddeford’s third Travis Roy Award winner as he joins Tony Dube and Casey LaFlamme, who won the award back in 1998. Biddeford is tied with St. Dom’s with the most Travis Roy winners.

Fleurent will take a break from hockey for a bit and focus on baseball. He will look to continue his hockey career by joining a junior team next season.

“I haven’t decided where, but definitely (will play),” Fleurent said after the East-West Senior All-Star game on Saturday night.

Biddeford adds more hardware

Just a week removed from winning the Class A State Title, the Biddeford High School Tigers were honored Sunday afternoon at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston. The team had four All-State First Team selections, five All-State Second Team selections, one honorable mention and one All-Academic Team selection.

“It’s a nice (accomplishment) with all the hard work the boys put in,” said  Reissfelder.

The 2010-2011 Biddeford team will potentially feature six seniors. Reissfelder is hoping for another solid season.

“We’ve set the bar high for ourselves. We’re already kicking around different ideas and Brady (Fleurent) is already telling me who he wants to play with. It will be fun.”

Reissfelder knows junior hockey is always lurking for some players.

“If it’s a better opportunity, I would never hold them back,” he added. “My personal opinion is four years is the way to go. We will treat each case on an individual basis.”
