Bishop marches past Saints as Waterville tries to defend state title

Lewiston, ME – In a rematch of last year’s Class A state title game St. Dominic had reigning state champs Waterville on the ropes only to watch it slip away in the third period.

Sound familiar?

Waterville scored three goals in the third period to overcome a pair of one-goal deficits, beating St. Dominic, 3-2, for the Eastern Class A state title.

Waterville’s prize is a date with Biddeford next Saturday at 6pm at the Colisee for the Class A State Championship game.

“They’re a strong team defensively and take care of their end, and they have big strong forwards,” said Dennis Martin. “We’ll just have to stop the firepower.”

After a scoreless first period, St. Dom’s built a 1-0 lead at 6:20 of the second period as Cam Brown dished the puck to the front of the net, where Alex Parker spun around, beating Waterville goalie Ryan Cormier.

With 2:40 left in the first, Waterville was awarded a penalty shot after Katelyn Massey was hauled down on a breakaway. Her shot was just wide of the net over St. Dom’s goalie Josh Charest’s shoulder.

Waterville would finally get on the board early in the third period when Jordan Whitten’s deflection beat Charest just 35 seconds into the period.

Will Desmarais’ power play goal at 4:12 of the third period allowed the Saints to regain the lead, 2-1.

At 6:43, Waterville overcame their second one-goal deficit as captain Kyle Bishop found the back of the net, beating Charest with a chip shot in close to the crease.

“We got the momentum in the third period, and that’s been our best period all year,” said Martin.

With Donne Larrivee in the box for cross-checking, Waterville took advantage of the power play as Bishop scored with 5:44 left in the game, giving them their first lead of the night.

“We just really dug down, the (players) skated that much harder and just did whatever they could do to win the game,” Martin said.

St. Dominic tried to comeback late in the period, but Cormier was solid in net making 24 saves for the win.
