Nor’easters season comes to an end against nation’s top team

The nation’s number one team and top seed backed up its billing Saturday evening as Norwich University advanced to the semifinals with an 8-1 victory over eighth-seeded University of New England in an ECAC East quarterfinal-round game played at Kreitzberg Arena.

First-year forward Kyle Thomas had a goal and two assists for the Cadets (21-1-4), who advance to host the semifinal round and championship game next Friday and Saturday. Norwich will skate with New England College in one semifinal game. Babson College and Skidmore College will face-off in the other.

Craig Serino would open the scoring for Norwich, converting a feed frpm Owen Carpino at 5:12 of the first.

UNE countered three minutes later when first-year Tyler Fleurent re-directed a shot by sophomore Kyle MacLennan for his fifth goal of the season.

Norwich got the eventual game-winner just 12 seconds later on a Pier-Oliver Cotnoir tally, then rounded out the first-period scoring on Thomas’ first goal of the evening.

The Cadets would add two second-period goals and three in the third to win in convincing fashion. Blake Forkey finished with four assists, while Chad Anderson chipped in three points with a goal and two assists. Norwich outshot UNE, 45-19, for the game.

Ryan Klingensmith had 14 saves in 52:33 of playing time to earn the win.

First-year goaltender Dallas Ungurian stopped 37 shots for the Nor’easters (3-22).
