Maine falls to Merrimack 6-3

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team fell to Merrimack 6-3 on Friday night at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. The Black Bears fall to 15-13-3 on the season and 12-10-2 in Hockey East play. Merrimack improves to 14-16-1 overall and 11-12-1 in conference play.

Maine took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta) at 13:32 of the first period. Jeff Dimmen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) began the play on the blueline and found Brian Flynn (Lynnfield, Mass.) in the left corner. Flynn then passed to House, who was just in front of the goal. He beat Merrimack goalie Joe Cannata for his 14th goal of the season and team-leading eighth power play goal.

Merrimack tied the game at 15:33 on a goal by Chris Barton. Stephane Da Costa and Karl Stollery each assisted on the goal. For Barton, it was his 18th goal of the season.

Neither team was able to score during the second period. Merrimack had an 18-16 edge in shots after two periods of play. The Black Bears were 0-for-3 in the second period.

Merrimack took a 2-1 lead just 14 seconds into the third period when Barton scored his second goal of the game and 19th of the season. Justin Bonitatibus and Da Costa each assisted on the goal. Kyle Bigos extended Merrimack `s lead to 3-1 when he beat Maine goalie Scott Darling (Lemont, Ill.) at 2:13 of the third period. J.C. Robitaille assisted on the goal for the Warriors.

Maine pulled to within one goal when David deKastrozza (Toms River, N.J.) scored on the rebound of a Josh Van Dyk (Woodstock Ontario) shot. Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) also assisted on the goal. Maine tied the game at 3-3 when Jeff Dimmen scored his 11th goal of the season. For Dimmen, it was his fifth straight game scoring a goal. House and Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) each assisted on the goal.

Merrimack took the lead back just 42 seconds later when Bobby Kramer tallied his first goal of the season. Ryan Flanigan and Carter Madsen each picked up assists on the goal. The Warriors extended their lead to 5-3 at 11:54 when Da Costa scored his 15th goal of the season. Fraser Allen gave Merrimack a 6-3 lead at 13:23.

Maine goalie Scott Darling made 24 saves in goal for the Black Bears in 53:23. He falls to 15-6-3 on the season. Dave Wilson (Caledon East, Ontario) stopped one shots in 6:37.

Joe Cannata finished with 34 saves. He improves to 8-10-1.

Maine finished with a 37-31 edge in shots on goal. The Black Bears were 2-for-9 on the power play, while Merrimack finished 0-for-2.

The two teams return to action on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Lawler Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM.
