Castleton too much for UNE

Eight different players scored for Castleton State College as the hosts blitzed the University of New England with eight goals in the first two periods en route to a 9-1 ECAC East men’s ice hockey victory Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.

With the win the red-hot Spartans improved to 9-7-5 (7-5-3 ECAC East). Castleton State is 8-1-3 in its last 12 outings. The Nor’easters fell to 2-18 overall, 1-14 in league play.

The Spartans scored four times in both the first and second periods to put the contest out of reach early. Justin Alonzo was the lone multiple-goal scorer for the Spartans, adding a pair of assists to his two-goal performance. Dan Bell had a five-point game with a goal and four assists, while Omar Pacha registered four points with a goal and three helpers.

UNE sophomore defenseman Eric Hines notched his first collegiate goal to account for the Nor’easters’ offense. Junior Mike Roper and first-year Dallas Ungurian split time in goal for the Nor’easters and combined to make 42 stops.

Castleton State held a wide margin (51-23) in shots on goal and converted on 3 of 9 power-play chances.

The Nor’easters return to Biddeford Arena next Friday and Saturday when they host Tufts University and Connecticut College.
