B.C. snaps Maine win streak at nine games

The Boston College men’s ice hockey team (12-6-2, 9-4-1 in Hockey East) snapped the Maine Black Bears (11-8-2, 8-5-2 in Hockey East) nine game unbeaten streak on Friday night with a 6-1 victory at Conte Forum.

Coincidently, Maine’s streak started against the Eagles back on Nov. 21 when the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie at Alfond Arena.

It didn’t take long for the Eagles to get on the board as 35 seconds into the contest Barry Almeida found the back of the net for the sixth time this season

Ben Smith potted his 10th goal of the season with a power play at the 2:48 mark of the second period, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Cam Atkinson gave the Eagles the 3-0 lead at the 9:27 mark.

Just past the halfway mark of the second period Atkinson added his second goal of the night with Biddeford native Brian Dumoulin picking up the lone assist.

Joe Whitney gave Boston College a 5-0 lead just 1:19 into the third period.

Maine finally got on the scoreboard as Mike Banwell scored a power play goal at 6:23 of the third period.

Eagles’ forward Jimmy Hayes scored, giving Boston College a 6-1 lead.

Maine goalie Shawn Sirman got the start, stopping 22 shots in the losing effort, before Dave Wilson replaced the freshman after Boston College scored their fifth goal on the night.

Wilson made eleven saves in relief.

John Muse stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced for the victory.

The Black Bears were 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Eagles went 1-for-5.

NOTES: Maine will be without goaltender Scott Darling and Robby Dee for two-to-four weeks due to injury. Darling suffered a knee injury in the victory over Merrimack last Saturday night, while Dee suffered a broken foot in the same game. Kyle Solomon didn’t make the trip with a groin injury. There is no timetable for his return.
