USM stuns Bowdoin with narrow victory

Junior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore goalie Mason St. Hilaire (Saco, Maine) stopped 42 shots as the University of Southern Maine held off Bowdoin College, 4-3, in an ECAC East-NESCAC inter-league game Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the third straight for the Huskies, and improves their record to 7-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in league play. The Polar Bears fall to 7-4-0 overall and 5-3-0 in league games.

Joy scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 18:47 of the second period when he converted a 2-on-1 break from senior Pat Noonan (Burlington, Mass.) for his team-leading 16th goal of the season. Joy scored earlier in the period netting the rebound of rookie Ryan Boucher’s (Lewiston, Maine) shot. Sophomore Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) picked up the second assist.

Rautenberg gave USM a 1-0 at 13:11 of the opening period potting a partial breakaway set up by senior Ryan Jean (Randolph, Maine).

After Joy’s first goal increased the margin to 2-0, the Huskies opened a three-goal advantage when senior captain Chris Travis (Scituate, Mass.) was hit by an errant Bowdoin clearing pass and the puck deflected past the Bowdoin goaltender for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Bowdoin, which piled up a 25-17 edge in shots on goal in the second period, stormed back on goals by rookie Robert Toczylowski (Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Jordan Lalor (Needham, Mass.). Toczylowski scored at 11:16 as a Bowdoin power play was coming to an end, and drew an assist on Lalor’s goal at 17:47. Sophomore Aaron O’Callahan (Glencoe, Ill.) also drew an assist.

Trailing 4-2 entering the final period, Bowdoin got back within one at 1:50 as junior Jeff Fanning (Billerica, Mass.) slid a shot from the left wing circle just inside the far post. That would be the end of the scoring as St. Hilaire kept the Polar Bears at bay over the final 18 minutes, including much of the final 1:22 when visitors had pulled the goalie for the extra attacker.

Sophomore Richard Nerland (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Connor Shannon (Stratham, N.H.) split the goaltending duties for Bowdoin and combined for 31 saves.

Southern Maine looks to extend its win streak on Saturday (7:00 p.m.) when it hosts Colby College. Bowdoin plays at the University of New England Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m.).
