Maineiacs continue to wheel and deal before trade deadline

The Lewiston Maineiacs made two moves before the noon trading deadline on Thursday as they acquired Matthew Bissonette from the Chicoutimi Saguneens before sending Alexander Beaton to the Gatineau Olympiques.

The Maineiacs also sent a first round pick, a third round pick, and a fifth round pick in 2010. They also received a 2010 third round pick from Gatineau.

(Matthew) Bissonette is a big smooth skilled 6’4 centerman with incredible puck possession and skill; he will be a powerplay player for sure,” said Lewiston Maineiacs General Manager Roger Shannon.

Bissonette, 17, spent the 2009-2010 season with the Moncton Wildcats, scoring four goals and 14 assists in 28 games. He was traded to Chicoutimi on December 23, but decided not to report to Chicoutimi.

Shannon expects big things from Bissonette in the coming years.

“He is in line to be our first line center at 19,” Shannon added.

The Bissonette deal coincided with the Beaton deal.

(Alex) wanted to play center and we were getting pretty deep there, moving him allowed us to finish the deal for Bissonette,” Shannon stated.

Beaton in his third season with Maineiacs had 10 goals, 20 assists for 30 points in 39 games this season.

“Beaton was a great ambassador of our team; however, we wanted to give him the chance to play,” said Shannon.

Shannon believes the main core of players is set.

“We pretty much will be set for the next year or so, we have a little work to do and some plans have been laid already.”
