UNE earns their first victory in Division-III

Rookie defenseman Jonathan Grandinetti (Ottawa, Ontario) scored a power play goal to break a 1-1 tie early in the third period as the University of New England men’s ice hockey team earned its first win as a varsity program with a 2-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-league game played Saturday evening at Waterville Valley Arena.

With the Nor’easters a man-up, Grandinetti rifled a shot from the point just inside the right post at 4:40 of the third for his first collegiate goal. UNE first-year goaltender Dallas Ungurian (Edmonton, Alberta) came up with several spectacular stops down the stretch to make the one-goal margin stand up.

UNE fell behind at the outset as Panther first-year Matt Aponte (Plano, Texas) notched his fourth goal of the season with just 35 seconds gone by.

The Nor’easters would square the game up less than two minutes later when sophomore defenseman Kyle MacLennan (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia) converted a pass from first-year forward Hugo Margoc (Linz, Austria).

Ungurian finished with a total of 41 saves for the Nor’easters, who continued their strong penalty killing by holding Plymouth State (6-4) scoreless on all eight of its extra-man opportunites. Ungurian’s outing was his third game of the season with 40 or more stops.

UNE (1-8) returns to action next Friday (Jan. 8) with a road game at fellow ECAC East opponent New England College.
