Maine earns a spot in the finals

After their two-week holiday break, the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team (9-7-2) extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with a 6-6 tie against the Princeton Tigers (4-8-2) in the opening game of the Florida College Classic.

The Black Bears advance to the championship game on Wednesday as they defeated the Tigers in a shootout and will face the Colorado College Tigers at 7pm. Princeton will play ECAC rival Cornell in the consolation game.

Special teams played a big part of the contest. The Black Bears went 3-for-6 on the powerplay while the Tigers were 4-for-8 with the man advantage.

Maine jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the first period with powerplay goals from Adam Shemansky and Robby Dee.

Taylor Fedun answered for Princeton on the powerplay with 6:15 remaining in the first period.

The Black Bears went into the locker room with a 3-1 lead when Josh Van Dyk notched his first goal of the season with 2:36 to play. It was also his second point of the period as he received an assist on Shemansky’s goal.

Just 1:09 into the second period, Gustav Nyquist scored his 12th goal of the season while on the powerplay.

Princeton dug themselves out of the three goal hole as they recorded three unanswered goals with the man advantage.

Dan Bartlett, a Portland native and former North Yarmouth Academy standout, cut into Maine’s lead at the 4:53 mark of the second period.

Mark Magnowski got his second and third goals of the season 76 seconds apart. Fedun and Mike Kramer assisted on both goals.

Theo Andersson gave the Black Bears the 5-4 lead heading into final period with the assists going to Klas Leidermark and Kevin Swallow

Dee recorded his second goal of the game 4:03 into the third period. Nyquist and Swallow set the mark up.

Princeton extended the game into overtime with goals from Kevin Lohry and Matt Arhontas.

Scott Darling (9-3-2) made 35 saves for the Black Bears and Zane Kalemba (2-5-2) turned aside 29 shots.
