Middlebury shutout UNE in ECAC/NESCAC action

Senior forward John Sullivan (Delmar, N.Y.) scored twice as the nationally-ranked Middlebury College men’s hockey team defeated the University of New England, 5-0, in an ECAC East/NESCAC crossover game Saturday afternoon at Kenyon Arena.

The Panthers, ranked No. 8 in the latest USCHO Division III poll, scored in each period to improve to 3-1-2 on the season.

Sullivan tallied the lone goal of the first period at the 9:41 mark, taking a pass from sophomore Martin Drolet (Lachine, Quebec) and wristing a shot into the top corner of the net.

Middlebury doubled its lead 2:51 into the second period when first-year Brett Brazier (Okemos, Mich.) recorded the first goal of his career. Sullivan made the Panther advantage 3-0 later in the frame as Brazier and Drolet picked up assists on the play.

The Panthers peppered UNE first-year Dallas Ungurian (Edmonton, Alberta) in the middle stanza with 19 shots, forcing the rookie goalie to make 17 saves to keep the Nor’easters’ deficit at three.

First-year Mathieu Dubuc (Blainville, Quebec) registered his third point of the game a mere 13 seconds into the third period, and junior Bryan Curran (Wilmette, Ill.) found the back of the net three minutes later to complete the scoring.

Drolet finished with three assists for the Panther offense, while sophomore John Yanchek (Hillsborough, N.J.) made 22 stops on the defensive end to post the shutout.

Ungurian totaled 37 saves for the Nor’easters (0-7), who return home to face the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday (7 p.m.) at Biddeford Arena.

Middlebury is off until January 2 when it hosts the annual Holiday Classic with Babson College, USM, and Salve Regina University.
