Southern Maine Women Picked for Sixth in ECAC Preseason Poll

The University of Southern Maine women’s ice hockey team has been picked to finish sixth among 12 teams in this year’s Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women’s East preseason coaches’ poll that was released recently.

Manhattanville College was tabbed by the coaches to finish first collecting five first place votes and 168 points. The College of the Holy Cross was second with four first place votes and 133 points, just ahead of defending league titlist Norwich University, which picked up three first place votes and 130 points.

Saint Anselm College was fourth in the poll with 107 points followed by the University of Massachusetts Boston with 90 points and USM with 80.

Rounding out the poll are Salve Regina University (79 points), New England College (62), Castleton State College (46), Saint Michael’s College (40), Nichols College (25) and Plymouth State University (14).

The Huskies open their 2009-10 season this Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (4:00 p.m.) when they host Castleton and Norwich at the USM Ice Arena.

After the opening weekend, the Huskies will travel to Holy Cross on November 10 (7:00 p.m.) for the first of three straight road games. The Huskies travel to Saint Michael’s on November 13 (7:00 p.m.) and Bowdoin College on November 20 (5:30 p.m.) before returning home to host preseason favorite Manhattanville on November 21 (1:00 p.m.). The Huskies close the month of November with a trip to Colby College on November 24 (4:30 p.m.).

The Huskies will play three games in December with home games against New England College on December 4 (7:00 p.m.) and Saint Anselm on December 5 (4:00). The Huskies close out the first semester portion of the schedule with a road game at Salve Regina on December 12.

Southern Maine returns to action after exams and the holiday break to host Sacred Heart University in a non-league game on January 7 (4:00 p.m.). USM hits the road for games at Plymouth State on January 8 (6:00 p.m.) and Norwich on January 9 (3:00 p.m.).

The Huskies return home for five straight home games against Plymouth State on January 15 (4:00 p.m.), Saint Michael’s on January 16 (4:00 p.m.), UMass Boston on January 22 (4:00 p.m.), Nichols on January 23 (1:00 p.m.), and Colby on January 26 (7:00 p.m.) before concluding the month traveling to Manhattanville on January 30 (7:00 p.m.).

The final month of the regular season has the Huskies on the road for four games at Saint Anselm on February 5 (4:00 p.m.), New England College on February 6 (1:00 p.m.), Nichols on February 12 (7:30 p.m.) and UMass Boston on February 13 (1:00 p.m.) before concluding the campaign with home games against Salve Regina on February 19 (4:00 p.m.) and Holy Cross on February 20 (1:00 p.m.).

The ECAC Women’s East playoffs begin February 27 with first round games. The semifinals and finals will take place on March 6-7 at the site of the highest remaining seed. The tournament winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.
