Junior Pirates fall short to Hartford, 3-2

Cromwell, Conn. – The Portland Junior Pirates played a pair of games this weekend against the Hartford Junior Wolf Pack, but couldn’t find the win column as they dropped a 3-2 decision on Saturday night at Champions Arena in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Danny McAuliffe had another strong game as he scored a goal and assist on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as Bill Strakosch scored two goals on the night, including the game-winner in second period.

With the Jr. Wolf Pack on the power play, McAuliffe picked up the loose puck, scoring a shorthanded goal just 2:59 into the game, giving the Jr. Pirates an early 1-0 lead.

The Jr. Wolf Pack scored three unanswered goal to build a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Bill Strakosch tied the contest up with 7:11 to play in the first period with Kody Helbig and Mike Novella setting up the play.

Hartford took the lead, 2-1, at 12:05 of the second period as John Corrigan scored his fifth goal of the season.

At 15:27, Strakosch scored the eventual game-winner.

Portland tried to get back into the game as they responded with a quick goal, only 21 seconds into the third period, when Jason Michaud fired one past Jr. Wolf Pack goalie Brandon Decker.

Jr. Pirates’ defenseman Mike Smith and Danny McAuliffe were credited with assists on the play.

Jr. Pirates’ goalie Danny Green made 30 saves in the loss, while Brandon Decker turned aside 24 shots in the victory.

Both teams failed to score a power play goal as Portland went 0-for-7, while the Wolf Pack went 0-for-5 on the night.
