Black Bears Notebook

In last night’s contest Michigan State was able to use their size advantage to get to Scott Darling. Expect Maine to protect their netminder better tonight.

“We didn’t do a good job in front of our net,” said Maine’s Gustav Nyquist. “I think they got too many second and third shots down in front of our net.”

“They got a good size team,” said Maine’s head coach Tim Whitehead. “The reason they out shot us is second shots. They made it very difficult for Scottie. I thought Scottie was sharp but he was under sieged on the second and third shots.”

Gustav Nyquist among the nation’s leaders

The lone bright spot for the Black Bears on the young season has been sophomore forward Gustav Nyquist. He leads all of Hockey East scorers with three goals and two assists. He’s third in the nation behind Michigan State’s Corey Tropp who has seven points (4 goals and 3 assists) which is tied for first and Derek Grant who has six points (2 goal and 4 assists).

“I felt good out there,” said Nyquist after the game Friday night. “Our whole line felt really good out there. “We created a lot of opportunities for us and scoring chances.”

Youth this time around

The last time Michigan State and Maine faced off was at the 2007 Frozen Four. Both coaches agree their teams in 2009-2010 are younger and less experienced.

“There’s a whole bunch of new players,” said Michigan State’s head coach Rich Crowley. “Both those teams are experienced teams and good depth. Both of these teams are young and have growing to do.”

“You had too young teams keyed up for the,” said Whitehead. “Unfortunately they capitalized two more times then we did.”

Dave Wilson, David de Kastrozza, and Brett Carriere are only players remaining from Maine’s Frozen Four team. Nick Sucharsk and Bobby Jarosz are the only members on the 2007 National Championship team on the current roster for the Spartans.

Game two is tonight at 7pm. Maine hockey Journal’s coverage begins at 6:30 from the Alfond Arena.
