Maine struggles against Union, falls 6-3

Schenectady, NY – There was no hangover for the Union Dutchmen on Saturday night against the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team as they completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in front of 1,864 at the Messa Rink.

Sophomore Brian Yanovitch had two goals to lead the way for Union, while Gustav Nyquist scored his first two goals of the season for Maine and freshman Adam Shemansky added his second in as many games.

The Dutchmen jumped to a four goal lead before Maine got on the board.

With 10:50 to play in the first, John Simpson snapped one past Dave Wilson’s glove, giving Union a 1-0 lead.

Not even two minutes later, Jeremy Welsh made it 2-0 for the Dutchmen when he picked the top corner. Kelly Zajac, the brother of New Jersey Devils’ forward Travis Zajac, recorded the lone assist on the play.

The Dutchmen continued to go high on Wilson as Yanovitch let a wrister go above Wilson’s glove hand at 7:54 of the second period.

Union didn’t miss a shift as Adam Presizniuk recorded his first of the season at 9:42 of the period to make it 4-0. Mario Valery-Trabucco notched his second assists on the night.

At 12:27 of the second period, Adam Shemansky put the Black Bears on the board with a power play goal. The initial shot was fired off Josh Van Dyk’s stick from the point as Shemansky tipped it in past Union’s goalie Corey Milan.

After dishing the puck to his teammates, Valery-Trabucco decided to score one of his own 1:20 into the final period.

Maine’s Gustav Nyquist scored the next two goals; pulling Maine to within their closest deficit of the night, 5-3, but it wouldn’t be enough as Brock Matheson sealed the win for Union with a power play goal at 19:24 of the third period.

Maine’s Dave Wilson and Union’s Corey Milan each made 26 saves in game. Maine was 2-for- 4 on the powerplay, while the Dutchmen went 1-for-3 on the night.

Maine will now return home on Friday as Michigan State comes to Alfond Arena for a two game series.
