Jr. Pirates winless at the showcase

Simsbury, CT – It was a tough weekend for the Portland Junior Pirates.

After a 4-2 loss on Friday night to the Philadelphia Little Flyers, the Jr. Pirates dropped a 1-0 decision to the Philadelphia Junior Flyers on Saturday night followed by a Sunday matinee where fell to the New Jersey Rockets, 5-1.

The Rockets built a 3-0 lead in the first.

Travis Daniel started the scoring for the Rockets with a goal at 3:18 of the first period. Connor McStravick was credited the lone assist on the play.

Luke Ross made it 2-0 at the 6:35 of the period.

With 10:41 remaining in the first period, Travis Daniel beat Jr. Pirates’ goalie Connor Brogan, giving New Jersey a 3-0 lead. Assists went to Sulmonte – his second of the game and Nickey Lepore.

The Jr. Pirates finally got on the board with 4:59 to remaining in the first period as Danny Green scored for the young bucs. J.J. Carroll and Kevin Ray were credited with the assists.

New Jersey regained the three goal lead, 4-1, when Luke Ross scored his second of the game at 7:20 of the second period. Travis Daniel put the game out of reach for Portland when he scored his second of the contest on the powerplay with 9:10 left to play in the game.

Connor Brogan made 32 saves in the loss, while Justin Farrell made 25 saves in the victory.

The Jr. Pirates will be back on the road on Friday night to face the Northern Cyclones in Hudson, NH. The Junior Pirates have their home opener on Saturday at the MHG Center against the Cyclones. Game time is 4:30pm.
