Pirates topple Monarchs in Berlin

Berlin, NH – The Portland Pirates put yesterday out of their mind and rebounded nicely as they defeated the Manchester Monarchs, 5-1, before a crowd of 800 at Norte Dame Arena in Berlin, NH.

The Pirates found themselves down, 1-0, after Justin Azevedo found the back of the net, beating goaltender Jhonas Enroth at 16:44 of the first period.

The Pirates proceeded to storm back scoring four unanswered goals in the second period.

Kyle Wanvig is making a strong case for sticking around the Pirates, added his third point in two games with his first goal of the preseason just eight seconds into the second period. Dennis Persson and Tyler Ennis – both first round draft picks by the Buffalo Sabres – were credited with assists on the play.

Just 2:50 later Persson earned his second assist when fed the puck to Derek Whitmore, who found the back of the net, giving the Pirates their first lead of the exhibition season, 2-1.

Paul Byron extended the Pirates lead to 3-1 when he scored unassisted at 5:07 of the second period, beating Jeff Zatkoff. It was Byron’s second goal of the preseason.

The Pirates capped off the second period as Felix Schutz scored in his first game since being assigned to Portland at 8:33 of the period, beating Mike Zacharias, who came in relief for Zatkoff.

Dennis Persson recorded his third assists of the game, added to his assists on Saturday for four points in two games.

Portland made it 5-1 when TJ Brennan fired a blast by Zacharias for the power play goal at 8:35 of third period.

Jhonas Enroth played the entire game allowing one goal on 34 shots for win, while Jeff Zatkoff took the loss making 12 saves on 15 shots. Mike Zacharias played the final 30 minutes, stopping 18 of 20 shots faced in the game.

The Pirates went 2-for-8 on the power play. Manchester was 0-for-3

NOTES: Portland will return back to Portland Ice Arena on Monday for practice at 10am. The Pirates next game is on Wednesday against the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
