Maine recruit, Ashley, named MJAHL Player of the Week

Summerside PEI – Darcy Ashley is taking the Maritime Junior “A” Hockey League by storm as the 16-year old winger won the MJAHL Player of the Week honors for the week ending September 22.

In three games last week for the Summerside Western Capitals, the 2011 University of Maine recruit earned nine points, good for three goals and six assists. On Sunday night against Campbellton, Ashley turned in two goals and two assists for four points and currently leads the league with 11 points. He also leads the league in goals with five.

BlackBearWhite - 288x220 “He tested in top physical condition and has been a top performer since opening day”, said Summerside’s Head Coach Gordie Dwyer in the league’s press release. “Darcy has great offensive instincts and is a real competitor. He has a strong work ethic and will continue to improve. Darcy will be an impact player for the Summerside Western Capitals and a sure fan favorite.”

The Capitals return to the ice on Friday to face the Campbellton Tigers. They are facing the Nauss TIM-BR Mart Lumberjacks on Sunday.

Brown also off to a hot start

Fellow 2011 recruit, Cam Brown, is adjusting to the Tier I Midget AAA league. The Boston Advantages just wrapped up their first weekend in Tier I play.

The 16-year old has two goals and assist in five games.

The Advantages travel to Mid-Am Tier I Elite Showcase in Columbus, Ohio this weekend.

USHL Fall Classic underway

The biggest scouting event for NCAA teams is underway and Maine has three commitments playing this weekend in Mark Anthoine (Chicago Steel), Stuart Higgins (Youngstown Phantoms), and Johnnie Searfoss (Fargo Force) — All three are 2010 recruits.

Matt McNeely, another 2011 recruit, took part in the NAHL Showcase last week with the USA National Team Development Program’s Under-17 team. In two games, the goaltender was 1-0 with a 2.87 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage.

The Under-17 team has the weekend off as the Under-18 team plays in the USHL Fall Classic this weekend. McNeely returns to ice on October 2 to face Mark Anthoine and the Chicago Steel.
