Sabres add grit with Larsen

The Buffalo Sabres have added another piece of the puzzle for the Portland Pirates, signing Brad Larsen to an AHL contract, a contract he hopes to parlay into an NHL job at some point this season.

Larsen, 31, missed last season due to surgeries for his hip and a sport hernia. He was acquired by the Anaheim Ducks in a early season trade with the Atlanta Thrashers for Mathieu Schneider

In his first day in camp Larsen has looked solid, leaving Sabres’ coach Lindy Ruff to take notice.

“Just work ethic and grit, what he brings,” Ruff said. “He plays the game real hard. A good character guy. … He can really move for a big man. … (Lindy noted he’s one of fastest skaters on team) … That’s a pretty good mix for a depth player for us.”

He has 294 career games in the NHL with Colorado and Atlanta, scoring 48 points (19g, 29a) and 134 penalty minutes.
