Lewiston completes the sweep

Lewiston, ME – In a strong home showing, two goaltenders combined for the shutout and the Maineiacs got goals from three separate players as the defeated the Shawinigan Cataractes 3-0. Shawinigan has not scored a goal since Friday, running their shutout streak to five-plus periods.

“It’s just real important to come out of the dressing room on fire,” said Maineiacs’ Head Coach Don MacAdam.

“They’ve (Lewiston) done a great job,” said Shawinigan’s Head Coach Eric Veilleux. “They’ve got really good young players.”

After several scoring chances in the first period, Alexis Piette potted home a rebound with 5:28 remaining in the opening stanza. The opportunity was created when Billy Lacasse fired the initial shot and Piette knocked in the rebound. Sebastien Trudeau got the secondary assist on the goal.

“One of the things we wanted to do this year like any team, we wanted to be dominate on home ice,” said MacAdam. “You don’t dominate home ice with a slow start. That’s a reflection of the leadership on this team.”

At 9:53 of the second period Jordan Kennedy relieved Adrien Lemay, who stopped all 15 shots.

“We got great goaltending,” said MacAdam. “Lemay is Lemay, a really solid goaltender. I really liked the way Kennedy played tonight.”

Kennedy made 13 saves in his half of the game. MacAdam wanted to see how Kennedy performs off the bench.

“We wanted Kennedy to come off cold off the bench. I thought he did a excellent job. He had to make a big save off the top.”

“It’s a little more nerve-racking coming in halfway in,” said Jordan Kennedy. “You get use to it after facing a few shots. I had make that big save and once I made that save, I felt more confident.”

Lewiston would go up 2-0, 3:35 into the third when Samuel Carrier fired one past Francois Lacorte. Assists went to Jean-François Plante and Alexander Beaton.

“Jamie (Dumont) and I talk about this a lot, we work on concepts, and we have an intelligent good skating team,” MacAdam said.

With 4:14 remaining, Samuel Grenache slid one past Lacorte while shorthanded to give Lewiston the 3-0 lead.

The Maineiacs were 1-for-7 on the powerplay. Shawinigan was 0-for-7.

Notes: The Maineiacs travel to Saint John on Tuesday to face the Sea Dogs. The two same teams play a contest in Fredericton, New Brunswick at the Willie O’Ree Place.
