Five more players added to waivers
- Updated: August 26, 2009
At this practice this morning I got a chance to speak to Roger Shannon about the waiver draft that started on Monday.
“Too quickly to explain the waiver process, what it does is give all 18 teams in the league an opportunity to say, know what I like this kid, I want to bring him over,” said Shannon after Friday’s cuts.
Friday we learned the team put Philip Wright, Tommy Dery, Justin Cloutier, and Marc-Andre L’Hereault were all put on waivers. Shannon has also place a few more on the waiver wire. Kirk Rafuse, Marc-Antoine Coulombe, Damian Pinheiro, Jonathan Connelly, and Victor Heselton were also put on waivers this week.
Rafuse was the Maineiacs third string goalie in 2007-2008. He was 2-1, with a 5.13 goals-against average and a .840 save percentage. He stayed in Lewiston for most of the year because the team knew they were going to lose Jonathan Bernier to the World Junior Championships.
Jonathan Connelly was a 2008 draft pick of the Maineiacs. Some people thought he was the best goalie in the draft class. It was a tough year for him last year. I hope he can find a place to play. He was 2-3 with a 4.62 goals-against average and a .818 save percentage with the Maineiacs last season.
Marc-Antoine Coulombe, another goalie, never played with the team. He was drafted in 2007. Damian Pinheiro the fourth goalie on the list was a free agent invitee this training camp this year.
Heselton, a defenseman is 19 and he was the team’s third round pick in 2006. He decided to go the NCAA route. He hasn’t received a scholarship to any schools.
Although he wasn’t put on waivers, Ian O’Brien has left the team.
This now leaves Adrien Lemay, Jordan Kennedy, Tyler Piercy, and Charles Grant are only four goalies in the Maineiacs organization.
Note: On Thursday, the Maine Hockey Journal will air the Maineiacs’ Media Day live beginning at 11:30am.
